ENCORE is an umbrella term we use to describe the performing arts program at Texas State University. ENCORE comprises the esteemed Supple Music Series and the popular University Arts series. Both programs bring award-winning world-class performers to the campus, providing students, faculty, staff, and community members with an intimate performing arts experience without having to leave San Marcos. In fact, ENCORE has a reputation for attracting loyal patrons from all across central Texas.
In 2003, Texas State University President Jerry Supple and his wife Cathy Supple launched the Supple Folk Music series at Texas State University driven by their passion for this traditional American art form. After Jerry’s death, Cathy continued to support this campus activity.
Jerry and Cathy’s love of folk music has been contagious. Over the past decade, the Supples’ connections within the folk music community have allowed them to bring some of the very best artists to Texas State’s performance venues.
In the beginning, The Newton Street Irregulars were staples along with friends Trish Miller and John Kirk, Carmen and Dick Gilman, John McCutcheon, and Robin and Linda Williams. Later Sara Hickman, Grammy-nominated Tommy Emmanuel, and the popular group Crooked Still were added to the Supple Music program roster.
Thanks to the Reed Parr Music Endowment and the generosity of CenturyTel, the future of folk music on the Texas State campus is secure. John Navarrette, District Manager for CenturyTel, pledged a total of $50,000, making CenturyTel the permanent corporate sponsor for the series. This gift will be matched dollar-for-dollar from the Reed Parr Music Endowment and will result in a total endowment of at least $100,000 to support the Jerry and Cathy Supple Folk Music Series in perpetuity.
The University Arts series brings performing arts to San Marcos that rivals arts programming offered in the world’s largest cultural centers. The series is funded through a student service fee and is managed by a committee of faculty and staff appointed by the Texas State University Faculty Senate.
